Welcome to Cult Cortina, my column dedicated to the Ampezzo valley. I’ll guide you through top spots, style, delicacies, timeless trends, and all kinds of hidden gems.
It’s me, George, your ever-reliable dandy!
Cult Cortina
I’m about to let you in on a little secret, friends: I’ve never been this crazy about chocolate before. But ever since I tried the Sacher cake by master baker Massimo Alverà, I’ve totally changed my mind, and well, I keep giving in to temptation!
In my humble opinion (try it and see for yourself), this is the ultimate Sachertorte. Honestly, I believe Alverà’s version could easily put to shame every pastry shop, and even the grandest hotels, of the entire Austrian Empire, and dare I say, the Austro-Hungarian one too. Truly unmatched!
Tall, fluffy, perfectly moist, and lavishly layered with a generous spread of apricot jam, so silky it’s almost like a gelée. And then there’s the chocolate ganache: thick, creamy, and luscious, wrapping everything in pure decadence. It’s a melt-in-your-mouth paradise, a little ritual of happiness, an absolute marvel!
Pasticceria Alverà isn’t just a sweet stop, it’s a strategic crossroads in the heart of Cortina. A historic meeting place and true local institution since 1914, this beloved pastry shop has carried on the artisanal tradition begun by founder Adolfo. What started as a humble bakery has, over the years, grown into a pastry shop of excellence, and today, also a refined café.
From sweet to savory, and back again! For me, the other side of indulgence is all about their fabulous mini quiches, with mushrooms or zucchini: simply irresistible. The perfect amuse-bouche to curb your hunger with a touch of style.
Chef’s honor, George’s promise!
