Every autumn, Cortina d’Ampezzo celebrates the return of livestock from the mountain pastures with the evocative Festa del Desmonteà, an authentic event that brings together farming culture, Ampezzo identity, and the beauty of the Dolomites. On Saturday and Sunday, the town centre comes alive with a picturesque parade of cows, horses, donkeys, sheep, and goats, all led by shepherds in traditional dress. celebrates the return of livestock from the mountain pastures with the evocative Festa del Desmonteà, an authentic event that brings together farming culture, Ampezzo identity, and the beauty of the Dolomites. There’s no shortage of convivial moments, including the blessing of the livestock and farming equipment. There will be markets featuring local cheeses and crafts, food tents serving traditional specialties such as sausages, polenta, and typical sweets, as well as children’s games.
In Piazza Angelo Dibona and along Corso Italia, a festive and authentic atmosphere fills the air, a perfect opportunity to experience Cortina as it once was, surrounded by the scent of hay, the sound of cowbells, and the flavors of the mountains.
You can also take part in a curious and much-loved tradition: the weighing of the piglet. Throughout the day, a little piglet is brought to the square and shown to the public: locals and visitors alike can come closer, observe it carefully, and try to guess its weight. Whoever makes the most accurate guess wins a prize, often inspired by the flavors and typical products of the mountains.
