Every year on December 5 , Cortina d’Ampezzo celebrates one of its most cherished traditions: the arrival of Saint Nicholas in the town center. After a horse-drawn carriage parade along Corso Italia, San Nicolò, accompanied by angels and the parish priest, welcomes children and gifts each of them a bag of small presents.
The event, organized by ULDA (Union Ladis de Anpezo), a cultural association dedicated to preserving and promoting the traditions of Cortina d’Ampezzo, combines spirituality with folklore, transforming the heart of the town into a magical stage where the joy of children meets the allure of ancient local legends.
After the Saint’s arrival, the feared Krampus storm into the streets: demonic figures wearing wooden masks and fur costumes, their bells clanging as they run and roar, frightening the naughtiest children. They embody the darker side of the celebration, standing in sharp contrast to the light and kindness of San Nicolò.
This vivid portrayal of good and evil, sweetness and fear, makes the evening a collective ritual deeply rooted in Dolomitic tradition, an unforgettable experience that brings together locals and visitors in a festive atmosphere of snow, folklore, and Christmas spirit.
