On Ferragosto, Cortina d’Ampezzo celebrates the Virgin Mary with a unique local tradition.
Every year, on the night of August 14th, large bonfires made from old wood and discarded planks, known as the Virgin Mary Bonfires, are lit in the various hamlets of Cortina. As darkness falls, the fire is ignited, marking a moment of celebration and togetherness. Locals and visitors gather on the grass, sitting quietly as they watch the wood crackle and burn, immersed in a timeless tradition.
Additionally, to mark the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, a fiery “M” will be lit on the Tofane peaks, honoring the name of Mary.
