Alta Via n.1 – Embark on an unforgettable journey through the Dolomites

The Alta Via 1 is the most iconic of all the Dolomite high routes — a legendary north-to-south trail that’s a true dream for hikers from around the world. Known as the classic Dolomites traverse, it links a series of mountain huts set in breathtaking landscapes: shimmering alpine lakes, lunar rock formations, green valleys dotted with mountain farms, and sweeping views of the most famous peaks in the range.

Our itinerary begins at the legendary Lago di Braies, the turquoise jewel of the northern Dolomites near the Austrian border, and ends at Rifugio Capanna Trieste, at the foot of the Civetta’s majestic north face. Along the way, you’ll cross some of the most celebrated mountain groups — from the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park to the Cinque Torri, from Mount Pelmo to Civetta itself — traveling from the Tyrolean culture of South Tyrol into the heart of the Veneto region. It’s a journey that reveals the Dolomites’ extraordinary geology and their unique position as a meeting point between Northern and Southern Europe.

This package includes the most scenic stages of the Alta Via 1, with cozy nights in traditional mountain huts and a stay in a stylish 4-star hotel in the heart of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Guided by an expert mountain guide, you’ll spend your days trekking among spectacular peaks and your evenings savoring the authentic warmth of mountain hospitality.

  • Arrive in Cortina d’Ampezzo independently and check in at your 4-star Hotel Cortina.
  • Free time in the afternoon.
  • Return to the hotel for a welcome aperitif and briefing with the mountain guide.

A historic and elegant 4-star family-run hotel located in the old town of Cortina, on the famous pedestrian street Corso Italia. The hotel overlooks the picturesque basilica of Cortina and is renowned for its bar and excellent restaurant.

  • Transfer by two private minivans from Cortina to Lago di Braies (approximately 1 hour).
  • Here begins your adventure, starting from the enchanting Lago di Braies!
    The trail follows the small road along the western shore of the lake. After a pleasant walk by the water, the ascent begins, offering stunning views of the lake from above. The path then becomes steeper and more demanding, climbing through the valley beneath the rocky slopes of Croda del Becco. You’ll reach Rifugio Biella (2,327 m), surrounded by a spectacular lunar landscape.
  • From here, an easier walk leads to Rifugio Sennes, a welcoming mountain hut nestled in a peaceful alpine meadow.

  • From Rifugio Sennes, the trek begins with a gentle descent across grassy hollows on the wide Pian della Lasta plateau. Leaving the path to Rifugio Fodàra Vedla, continue southwest along a small mountain road. The trail then enters a steep gully between Pici Parëis and Col de Rü, descending through a series of sharp switchbacks to the plain of Rifugio Pederü (1,548 m).
  • From here, the Alta Via 1 continues into the Valùn de Fànes, an almost lunar and incredibly evocative landscape. After passing the pretty Le Piciodèl lake (1,819 m), cross the Rü dal Plan stream, climb a few switchbacks, and turn south. At 2,022 m, leave the main road on the right and reach Ücia Lavaréla – Rifugio Lavarella (2,042 m).

Rifugio Lavarella
  • Hearty breakfast and departure.
  • From Rifugio Lavarella, the trail begins across the meadows of the Natural Park. Three tight switchbacks lead to a scenic saddle at 2,174 m (7,133 ft), from which you can already glimpse your destination — Rifugio Lagazuoi.
  • The path descends over scree slopes to the oasis of Monte Lagazuoi, where the enchanting Lago Lagazuoi (2,182 m / 7,159 ft) mirrors the rocky towers and the majestic Cima Fànis Sud. Skirting the lake, the route continues south toward Forcella Lagazuoi (2,573 m / 8,442 ft). From here, a final climb leads to Rifugio Lagazuoi (2,752 m / 9,029 ft) — the highest point of the Alta Via 1.
  • Before reaching the hut, don’t miss a short visit to the World War I tunnels, a moving reminder of the battles fought in these mountains.
  • After enjoying the panoramic views from the Rifugio’s terrace, you can reach the summit cross of Piccolo Lagazuoi (2,778 m / 9,114 ft) in just a few minutes.

Rifugio Lagazuoi
  • Hearty breakfast and departure.
  • From Rifugio Lagazuoi, return to the Forcella and descend to Passo Falzàrego.
  • Continue across alpine meadows to reach Lago Limides, then climb a steep trail up to Rifugio Averau, the perfect spot for a panoramic lunch overlooking the Passo Giau area.
  • Descend to Rifugio Scoiattoli (2,255 m / 7,398 ft), set directly in front of the iconic Cinque Torri. Here you’ll find the Open-Air Museum of the Great War, which, together with those of Lagazuoi and Sasso di Stria, forms the largest WWI museum complex in the Dolomites.
  • Continue downhill to Rifugio 5 Torri, then follow a beautiful panoramic path that gently rises and falls beneath Monte Gusela, eventually reaching Malga Giau (2,000 m / 6,562 ft), where you’ll enjoy enchanting views of the Lastoi de Formin and Croda da Lago.

  • From Malga Giau, follow an easy and scenic trail toward Forcella Giau, then continue to the Mondeval Plateau — an archaeological site where the famous Mondeval Man, dating back 7,500 years, was discovered. From here, you’ll enjoy a privileged view of the majestic Monte Pelmo (3,168 m / 10,394 ft).
  • The route continues to Forcella Ambrizzola (2,274 m / 7,460 ft) before descending to Lago Federa and Rifugio Palmieri – Croda da Lago (2,046 m / 6,713 ft).
  • Overnight at Rifugio Palmieri – Croda da Lago.

  • From Rifugio Palmieri, the trail climbs back up to Forcella Ambrizzola. From here, descend along a panoramic path with breathtaking views of the majestic Monte Pelmo, one of the highest peaks in the Dolomites. Monte Pelmo was the first major Dolomite summit ever climbed — the Englishman John Ball reached its top in 1877.
  • Continue to Rifugio Città di Fiume, set in a peaceful clearing, and then proceed to Rifugio Staulanza (1,783 m / 5,850 ft), located on the mountain pass of the same name, at the foot of Pelmo.
  • Overnight at Rifugio Staulanza.

  • From Rifugio Staulanza, begin with a pleasant descent through clearings and alpine farms, heading toward the majestic Monte Civetta (3,220 m / 10,564 ft). Its imposing north face, stretching between Cima Su Alto and Torre Coldai, is known among climbers as the “Realm of the Sixth Grade” — the “Wall of all walls.”
  • As you climb toward Rifugio Coldai, the panorama behind you opens up to a spectacular view of Monte Pelmo. Soon you’ll reach Rifugio Coldai, nestled at the foot of the Civetta. Just beyond lies Lago Coldai, a small alpine gem shimmering with turquoise waters.
  • The trail continues around the Civetta, and to your right you’ll begin to glimpse the village of Alleghe and its lake below. From here, one final ascent leads to Rifugio Tissi (2,250 m / 7,382 ft), perched on a ridge facing directly onto the awe-inspiring north face of the Civetta.

  • From Rifugio Tissi, the trail continues along the base of Monte Civetta, following its impressive northern walls with spectacular views throughout the descent. The hike leads to the peaceful Rifugio Vazzoler, beautifully framed by surrounding peaks — the perfect spot for a short break and a refreshing drink or snack.
  • From there, continue descending to Rifugio Capanna Trieste, where you can enjoy a well-deserved lunch and celebrate the completion of your Dolomites adventure!
  • Private transfer back to Cortina d’Ampezzo (approximately 1 hour 30 minutes).
  • Overnight stay at Hotel Cortina 4*.

Luggage transfer details

Each participant is entitled to the transfer of one bag between huts — a duffel bag or backpack weighing a maximum of 8–10 kg (17–22 lbs).

The service is available on all stages except for Rifugio Sennes (Day 2) and Rifugio Tissi (Day 8).

When checking out from Hotel Cortina, you will leave your duffel bag or backpack in the hotel’s storage area. It will be delivered directly to Rifugio Lavarella, so make sure to pack everything you need for the first day of trekking and your first night at Rifugio Sennes in your hiking backpack.

Upon check-out from Rifugio Staulanza (Day 8), your bag will be transferred back to Hotel Cortina for your return. For your final night at Rifugio Tissi, you’ll therefore need to carry in your backpack everything required for that night’s stay.
