Cortina and surroundings
There are places that are wonderful not only for their own sake but also for everything that surrounds them: This is certainly the case with Cortina d'Ampezzo, nestled among the Dolomites and a crossroads of various cultures.
The Queen of the Dolomites shines for its position at the crossroads of multiple cultures: this is why discussing the area of “Cortina and its neighbors” holds a very specific meaning.
Cortina stands out precisely for its unique character, which blends Alpine, Ladin, Venetian, and Italian influences. It thrives on the balance and harmony between these diverse elements, which, although very different, are essential in making it inimitable, stunning, and unique.
For Cortina, stepping beyond its own boundaries is almost natural: it is a valley, yet also a “court” that has developed at the crossroads of two directions from north and south, and from east and west. If we look at the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Veneto, Cortina is located along the axis that connects Venice to the Prosecco Hills, extending all the way to the Queen of the Dolomites.
Delving into the stunning Dolomite area, we’ll find that next to Cortina lies the municipality of Auronzo, with its Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Lake Misurina.
Still in Cadore, in San Vito, for instance, you can admire Monte Antelao, the King of the Dolomites with its 3,264 meters of altitude, making it the second highest peak after Marmolada. Here, with a pleasant walk, you can relax on the shores of Lake Mosigo, which has been featured in numerous episodes of the TV series Un passo dal Cielo. If you venture into the nearby Trentino-Alto Adige region, you’ll find San Candido less than an hour from Cortina, as well as Brunico, Bolzano, and Merano. All these places have their own unique charm.

Earth is home to countless natural sites of great beauty. However, there are places created by human genius that aspire to be dreams. Venice is one of them.
Born out of the necessity to meet concrete security needs, the Serenissima transformed the lagoon’s seabed into an underwater forest, upon which it built a city. A city without streets and rivers, but with canals and “rio terà.”
An open-air museum, filled with museums of its own. A piece of living history, existing and enduring for centuries, evident in its rituals and traditional foods, in the quick steps of its inhabitants, in the accents of the Venetian dialect that here becomes a sweet lullaby, like the voice of the sea when it is calm.
Yet, the sea knows the worst storms, and Venice has once again learned to contain them, to defend itself from them. Thus, the dream continues to endure, challenging yet another boundary: the union between beauty and permanence.
